Review of Love Story by Erich Segal

Maybe I don’t understand love or this book doesn’t. I did not like this book as much as people claim to love it.

I think it was sexist and was more about exerting dominance over the partner. I don’t think it works that way.

Also, even though it was all consensual for Jenny to quit her dreams to marry Ol, why didn’t Ollie quit his law school to help Jen? Wasn’t that selfish and a double standard?

I think phrases like “..as I am the husband and the head of the family..” were too cringe worthy. And when they were not getting pregnant and the way Ollie instantly thought it must be Jen’s fault portrayed chauvinism.

I think the plot had too many flaws. And I wished for the author to explain how Ollie was acting the same way as his Father when he was talking about Bozo. That realisation to Ol could have made the story a bit better.

I liked the ending. The description was good to make me teary eyed.

The only character I loved was Phil for being a good father, listener and a friend.

I did not like the protagonist, Oliver and I hated the fact that Jenny was portrayed as a very superficial and weak character. I wish she had more depth.

Also, the way Jen kept on coercing Oliver to talk to his father even after he expressed his perception on the matter was a bit disturbing.

I rate it 🌟🌟 out of 5.
